Do tradies really need a website?

Word-of-mouth got you this far, so do you even need a website? An honest look at when it pays off and what a tradie site actually has to do.

Plenty of good tradies have run flat-out for years on referrals alone. So it is a fair question: do you actually need a website, or is it money spent to tick a box? Here is the honest answer from a studio that would rather tell you the truth than sell you something you do not need.

For some tradies, not yet. If your calendar is full from mates and repeat customers and you have no plans to grow, a tidy Google Business Profile might be all you need for now. But for most, there comes a point where word-of-mouth quietly caps how far you can go.

When word-of-mouth is not enough

Referrals are brilliant, but they have limits. They dry up when a big customer moves on. They rarely reach new suburbs you want to work in. And more and more, even a referred customer will Google your name before they call — if nothing credible comes up, some of that trust leaks away.

A website earns its keep when you want more of the right work: bigger jobs, better postcodes, or simply a steadier flow so you are not lurching between flat-out and dead quiet. It works while you are up a ladder.

What a tradie site must do

A tradie website does not need to be fancy. It needs to do a few things extremely well. Miss these and even a good-looking site will not bring you work.

  • Make your phone number huge and tappable on mobile — most visitors are on a phone
  • Say plainly what you do and the areas you cover
  • Show real photos of your own work, not stock images
  • Carry a few genuine reviews so a stranger can trust you
  • Load fast and look sharp on a phone screen
  • Make it dead easy to get a quote — a short form or a single tap to call

Do not forget Google Business Profile

Your website and your free Google Business Profile are a team. The profile is what shows up in Google Maps and the local pack when someone searches "electrician near me", and it is often the very first thing a customer sees. Claim it, fill it out completely, add photos, and gather reviews there too.

The two feed each other: a solid profile drives clicks to your site, and a credible site backs up the profile. Together they are far stronger than either alone, and the profile costs you nothing but a bit of time.

What to avoid

Skip the bloated builder that takes eight seconds to load and buries your phone number. Avoid deals that lock you into paying rent forever just to keep your own site online, and never hand over control of your domain to someone who will not give it back.

Keep it simple, keep it fast, keep it honest. A clean five-page site that makes it obvious what you do and how to reach you will out-earn a flashy one every time. If and when you are ready, we build exactly that — fixed price, no lock-in, you own everything.
